Depends if you are working for a firm or your own. If you work for a firm, expect to work long hours while the firms partners rake the money in. This could last 5 years until you rprove yourself and able to work withing the firm’s politics and structure. The profession is like others in that a lot of steps need to happen before you see dividends, accomplished by hard work and toeing the company line.

Do I like my job. Yeah, it’s pretty good. I am a trial lawyer and most of the time – despite the name – you are not in trial but rather gathering information and reading information so that you can evaluate a case and transmit that information to your client and/or an insurance adjuster so you can see if the case is going to be settled for about what it’s worth or tried because the parties can’t figure out what it’s worth or someone has an out of control client (or lawyer) who is not being reasonable. Most of the time I read paper and dictate reports but law lets you exercise your mind and help people and I like that.
There are lots of different kinds of lawyers – trial lawyers, appellate lawyers, lawyers who work with real estate, or taxes or wills or patents and what you make depends on a lot on how in demand your particular area of practice is and how good you are at and how hard you work. Lawyers can earn millions or as little as $30 – $40K a year. Depends on where you live, how hard you work and how good you are. If you go on line most State Bars do a once a year survey that tell you how much lawyers are earning in your state based on how long you have been practicing, your specialty, whether you are in a firm or solo, etc. Try working for a law firm first though as a summer employee – even if you have to volunteer to get the job b/c it is an expensive investment of your money, time and energy if you aren’t sure you want to do it. Good luck
