From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Karlsruhe is a city in the south west of Germany, in the Bundesland Baden-Württemberg, located near the French-German border. Founded in 1715 as Karlsruhe Palace, the surrounding town became the seat of two of the highest courts in Germany, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany (Bundesverfassungsgericht) whose decisions have the force of a law, and the Federal Court of Justice of Germany (Bundesgerichtshof) , the highest court of appeals in matters of civil law and criminal law. It therefore considers itself the home of justice in Germany, a role taken over from Leipzig after 1933. The city was planned with the tower of the palace (Schloss) at the center and 32 streets radiating out from it like spokes on a wheel, or ribs on a folding fan, so that a nickname for Karlsruhe in German is the “fan city” (Fächerstadt). Almost all of these streets survive today. Karlsruhe’s rail system, the Stadtbahn Karlsruhe, is well known in transport circles around the world for pioneering the concept of operating trams on train tracks (tram-trains), to achieve a more effective and attractive public transport system. This concept makes it possible to reach other towns in the region, like Ettlingen, Wörth am Rhein, Pforzheim, Bad Wildbad, Bretten, Bruchsal, Heilbronn, Baden-Baden and even Freudenstadt in the Black Forest right from the city centre. @jwonkojack Thanks for your comment. We were in 1980-82 at the Karlsruhe Nuclear Center, recently returned in 2009. We always loved Karlsruhe and its people. We always passed close to Neureut, I think you were with the US Army, because we lived in Linkenheim. Best regards. Horacio

Was with the US Army here 1971-72. Doesn;t look like it has changed too much. Loved the town – they had a nice little zoo where a hot chick in kinky black leather would feed the tigers.

@MINIHermanator I am very happy that you could make a very nice trip and that I helped you in some way with my comments. As you saw, they are beautiful places, both in Germany and Austria. They deserve a longer visit, no doubt about. Every 20-30 km there is something nice to visit. Kind regards and if you publish a video let me know, I would like to participate in the tour, watching it. A warm greeting. Horacio

@MINIHermanator Thank you very much for your comments, I hope you’ll enjoy your trips in Germany and Austria, both are wonderful Countries. I think you’d like to visit near Vienna an old cement quarry that was used by Hitler to make their aircraft Messerschmitt. It’s a beautiful walk along the inside of a mountain in a boat, as they talk about the whole story. I don’t remember its name, but worth a visit. Regards

@MINIHermanator We lived in Karlsruhe in 1980-82, while working at the Nuclear Center as a visiting scientist. And then we visited Europe only occasionally. Nearby Karlsruhe is beautiful to visit Heidelberg (40 km), Baden-Baden (40 km)., and Strasbourg (France, 80 km). In Salzburg you must visit the Festung Fortress Hohesalzburg, the Cathedral and the Church of San Pedro. Hallstadt, at 30 km is wonderful. Best Regards.

@Giovannisenzaterra Compared with the countries of Southern Europe, there is much less sun, more rain during the year. But it also has beautiful Spring, Summer and Autumn. A little short, but very nice. Greetings.

@jrc3ky Thank you very much for your comments. It is a very beautiful city. In the time we were there we made a number of friends and we kept contact by mail, long before email and FB were developed, and contacts were active in some cases for 10 years … Beautiful period that we always remember with affection.

Horacio

Yes, so many things change the last years… we send you the best wishes and hope you’ll come back some day to visit the “Fächerstadt”

@mciceteade: Thank you very much for your comment. If, indeed, Karlsruhe has changed since 1980-82, a little of what we saw on our visit in this video, which is from December 2008. We only had one day to visit the City, but it was a beautiful memory anyway. We hope to return someday!. Many greetings and good stay in Oklahoma and hope you can return soon to Germany.
