In the Lexington,KY area. My only income is work and I have 3 kids, the waiting list for our local legal aid is very lengthy. I would like to file sometime this year.

You get what you pay for, so if your lawyers cheap, then their service will be second rate as well.

If you were a dependent on your husband, then ask him to kick in for the attorneys fees.

Ever hear of – “the most expensive thing you can ever do is buy cheap paint” ?

Cheap lawyers come in second place.

I don’t think you need a lawyer to file, but you will need one to work through all the legalities of the children, custody, support, finances, debt load, vacation time, school costs, travel, IRA’s and retirement benefits, etc………….
If you haven’t thought about this yet – you WILL have a relationship with the bio-parent for the rest of your life.
    Still want to divorce?

Don’t skimp when it comes to a good divorce lawyer. You need a lawyer who will be an advocate for you so that your spouse doesn’t take you to the cleaners. Pay a little extra for a good lawyer because it will end up saving you money in the long run. A good lawyer will handle your divorce quickly and will try to minimize the amount of money your ex gets. When I got divorced I talked to all the people I knew who had gotten divorced and they all kept complaining about how their spouses lawyer was really tough and didn’t want to give them anything in the divorce. I hired that guy :)

Well you should get some of that tax stimulus refund, so there is a start. Ask family, friends and co-workers about a good cheap attorney. If that doesn’t work, use the phone book and start calling them for prices. You didn’t say anything about if your husband is going to fight you on any of this, if he’s not, then it will be (or should be) cheaper. My other suggestion is get a woman attorney, they seem to do a better job on child custody and support issues. Also, Howdy neighbor, I live in Hodgenville, Kentucky!

have you tried looking in your yellow pages, or asked around with friends or family..try asking at social service agencies..like a women’s center.

Try calling the bar association in Lexington for a referral with an attorney who handles divorces. Hiring an inexperienced lawyer because he’s cheap will cost you more money long term.

There are some great resources online for court filings, and if you fill them out and take them to the court clerk you can get a lot of unofficial help. The courts smile on self-representation in divorce (they’re tired of long, drawn out wars).

The main thing is agreement. The court part that makes the splitting of dishes official is icing. Can you and your ex make an agreement that you can both live with?

The online resources usually have examples. I recommend you use them. Sometimes they also have chat lines for help with particular questions.

    Good luck.
