Customers often ask whether SoPoly furniture is made from the same material as composite decking. It’s a fair question: both incorporate recycled materials and both are designed to live outdoors. But cut into each board and you’ll find their internal construction is fundamentally different.

Not all recycled plastic lumber is created equal

“Recycled plastic” can describe a lot of different products. What matters for durability is what the board is made of all the way through, not just what you see on the surface.

How capped composite decking is made

Many composite decking products use capped composite construction: a protective polymer shell over a core made with wood fibers and recycled plastic. The shell helps resist staining, fading and surface wear, but underneath it is an engineered wood-plastic composite, not solid HDPE.

How SoPoly lumber is different

SoPoly manufactures its outdoor furniture lumber from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) throughout the entire board. There’s no wood-flour or sawdust core, and no separate protective cap wrapped around a different material inside. When we cut, drill or route a board, the exposed material is still HDPE.

Why that matters for outdoor furniture

  • No wood fibers. SoPoly HDPE contains no wood-based core that could absorb moisture.
  • Consistent composition. The same material extends through every machined edge and drilled surface.
  • Color throughout. Pigments are incorporated during manufacturing, rather than relying on a colored cap over a wood-composite core.
  • Purpose-built. We make our lumber specifically for outdoor chairs, dining furniture, gliders, benches and more.

How SoPoly lumber is made

We’re vertically integrated, so we control every step from raw plastic to finished furniture right here in Georgia:

  1. HDPE plastic — recycled HDPE is the starting point.
  2. Melted HDPE — the plastic is melted down with color added.
  3. HDPE boards — the melted material is formed into solid lumber.
  4. CNC cutting — boards are precision-cut into furniture parts.
  5. Routing — edges are shaped and finished.
  6. Product assembly — our team builds each piece by hand.

Two materials, two applications

Capped composite decking is engineered for deck surfaces, and it performs well in that role. SoPoly’s solid HDPE is engineered for outdoor furniture. The point isn’t that one material is universally better than the other. It’s that SoPoly furniture doesn’t rely on a protective exterior covering a wood-plastic composite core.

Frequently asked questions

Is SoPoly furniture made from composite decking material?
No. Many composite decking products have a wood-fiber and plastic core under a protective cap. SoPoly lumber is solid HDPE with no wood content.

Does SoPoly poly lumber contain wood?
No. There is no wood flour, sawdust or wood-fiber core in SoPoly lumber.

What happens if a SoPoly board gets scratched or cut?
Because the board is HDPE throughout, a cut or drilled surface exposes the same material — there’s no different core underneath.

The SoPoly difference: it’s not just skin deep

Solid HDPE. No wood fillers. No composite core. Built for life outdoors.
